Football, Drum Lines, Battle of the Bands, Rooftop Parties, Rivalries, Reunions, and more fun is what Florida Classic Weekend is typically about. However, attendees can expect to see Law Enforcement activity increase in anticipation of the less than wholesome events that come with. Typical arrests come from Drug Charges, Resisting an Officer without Violence, DUIs, and in 2012 there was even a Prostitution sting.
Here are a few helpful tips to help you know your rights and what you need to do to keep the weekend fun and free from a visit to the Orange County Jail:
- Drink Responsibly and Designate a Driver.
If you plan on partying, set up a gameplan for getting from point A to point B. At the end of the day, a tow and a cab is going to be a whole heck of a lot cheaper than a DUI!
- Know your rights.
There’s a difference between probable cause and a consensual encounter. If an officer stops you, ask if you’re free to leave. If you are, then leave. If you aren’t, hand over an ID. Remain calm, listen, and don’t argue. Make sure you tell the officer that you are USING YOUR RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT. If you don’t actually say it, it can hurt you. As far as searches go, if the officer is ASKING, it’s a RED FLAG. It means they don’t have probable cause, so say NO if they ask for permission to search you, your belongings, or your vehicle. Remember, some officers will make statements that may make you feel like you should prove you don’t have anything to hide. You have nothing to prove, they do. Don’t give up your rights.
- Have Fun.
Make a plan, meet with friends. Having an extra eye on you or a witness with you at all times can be helpful in the event something happens. We all learned the buddy system as kids, it still helps to this day.
